Michael & Son’s strategy: Multiple revenue streams

Posted Sunday, October 5th, 2008

The father of David Lorenz thought his son was crazy for plowing full speed ahead with work for Gems TV on the basis of nothing more than a handshake a couple of years ago.

But the decision by the younger Lorenz — the one to whom radio ads refer as “the son in Michael & Son’s” — has proven to be a key element in the growth of the Reno company.

This year, Michael & Son’s Trading Co. will size about 50,000 rings for customers of Gems TV, which sells jewelry through a home shopping network and a Web site from its American base at Reno.

That’s enough to account for about 15 percent of the revenues of Michael & Son’s this year, and Lorenz figures it’s going to continue to grow. Read full story:

Public biofuels station open in Minden

Posted Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Bently Biofuel is pumping biodiesel and ethanol to the masses through a full-service public fueling station in Minden. photo

The station is located on Buckeye Road, off U.S. 395. Gas vehicles can use the ethanol mix and any diesel vehicle can run on the various mixes of biodiesel to be sold at the pump. Normal business hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The green service station was a dream of Minden business owner Don Bently, whose philosophy is to protect the environment by recycling and reusing materials, said Bently Biofuels general manager Carlo Luri last December. The station will be built “green” and sell healthy and environmentally conscious items, Luri said. “It’s been going well,” Luri said of the preparations to open. Bently Biofuels Company produces and sells biodiesel after recycling used restaurant oil at its plant off Buckeye Road. The fuel is nearly non-toxic and non-hazardous.

Nevada Power Co. will change name to NV Energy

Posted Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Sierra Pacific Resources’ utility subsidiaries Nevada Power Co. of Las Vegas and Sierra Pacific Power Co. of Reno are changing their names, but questions are being raised over the effectiveness of the name change.

The company is also proposing a statewide rate plan, but Chief Executive Michael Yackira said it was unclear what effect that would have on rates in Southern Nevada.

Effective Monday, both electric utilities will be called NV Energy, except on some legal documents.

The holding company needs shareholder approval to change its name to NV Energy Inc., change its corporate charter and replace SRP with a stock symbol that sounds more like the new corporate name. Sierra Pacific Resources NV Energy logointends to send out a proxy to shareholders this week, calling for a vote to make the holding company changes. Read full story:
